A1 Start-up Award 2016


Year 2016 marks the 25th Anniversary of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (“HKUST”). To celebrate this important milestone, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Alumni Association (“HKUSTAA”) has launched its first flagship program, A1 Start-up Award 2016, to recognize HKUST graduates with distinguished achievement in starting their businesses. A1 Start-up Award 2016 was successfully concluded on 19 March 2016. The winners were selected and the awards have been presented by the heavyweight judging panel.


A1 Start-up Award 2016 Awardees

8 shortlisted start-up contestants presented their businesses and the judging panel evaluated them in areas of innovation and creativity, financial strength, management team and HR strategy, social impact, source of funding and funding capability. The awardees for 6 awards including Gold, Silver, Bronze, Best Innovation, Best Social Impact and Best Management Awards are as follows:


Gold Award, Most Innovative Award, Best Management Award: Vinces Company Limited

Vinces Company Limited is in advertising technology, with their mobile Data Management Platform (mDMP) called AlikeAudience combining their clients’ (advertisers) 1st party data with various sources of data in their mDMP. AlikeAudience aims to provide their clients with insights and feedback about the promotion campaigns placed, allowing their clients to spend advertising budget efficiently, lowering cost per acquisition and improving the conversion rate. As the first mDMP in Hong Kong, Vinces attracted clients in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan.


Silver Award: freeD Group Limited

freeD Group Limited focuses on online travel information technology, providing on-demand travel assistant services. freeD Group Limited aims to provide their clients with personalized recommendations about trip planning and activity-to-do based on clients’ preferences, travel profile, travel time, target destination and the weather there with their data analytic technique, as well as hotel and ticket booking services, allowing clients to spend less time researching for trip, but more time on travel.


Bronze Award , Best Social Impact Award: Acesobee Limited

Acesobee’s signature product Acesome® is a personal care plan and mobile record gateway which enables the health metrics of patients to be recorded/monitored more systematically, reminds patients to take care their medication and schedule appointments and provides patients with customized healthcare tips and reminders. Acesome® allows patients to take better control of their health, hospitals/nursing home to reduce administrative cost for medical personnel, resulting in increased quality and efficiency of healthcare services.


Heavyweight Judging Panel

A1 Start-up Award 2016 welcomed successful entrepreneurs, corporate advisors and professionals as the judges to select the winners and provide valuable advice to the shortlisted. The impressive judging panel included:

-           Dr Allan Zeman - Chairman, Lan Kwai Fong Group

-           Dr Samson Tam - President, Hong Kong Business Angel Network

-           Mr Peter Chan - Partner / Hong Kong TMT Industry Assurance Leader, Ernst & Young,

-           Mr Marvin Lai - Managing Partner, iTM Ventures / Executive Director, Hong Kong Venture Capital and Private Equity Association

-           Mr Mark O. Clift - Chief Operating Office, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited

-           Mr Peter Mok - Head of Incubation Programs, Hong Kong Science Park


The judges pointed that they were impressed by the innovative ideas and qualities of shortlisted start-ups. The contestants have demonstrated originality in their business model and integration with technology to create value. In contrast to the traditional economy, business originality is the most critical success factor in order to stand out amid the fierce competition in the knowledge based economy.


Mr Alvin Lam, President of HKUSTAA remarked that “A1 Start-up Award 2016 is the 1st launch of HKUST Alumni Association Flagship project in developing entrepreneurship network between UST alumni. We are glad to have full support from university and active participation of alumni start-ups and we feel honored to invite impressive judging panel for this event. HKUSTAA will continue organizing A1 Start-up Award in future years, hoping that the success of this year will keep on.”
